MURRAY HILL, N.J. -- Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU - News) today introduced the latest enhancements to its MiLife(TM) SurePay® Solutions Suite, a group of pre-paid solutions designed to help both wireless and wireline operators meet subscribers' increasingly sophisticated requirements, including support for a wide range of mobile data services. Portugal's Vodafone Telecel will be among the first service providers to deploy the new enhanced features of the SurePay solutions suite, which has been deployed by mobile operators around the world. MiLife SurePay Version 8 offers flexible account spending and support for data services, such as short message services (SMS), and for transactions, including online purchases and content charging. This suite also offers a complete package of payment options, including mobile pre-paid, pre-paid calling card and post-pay capabilities. The MiLife SurePay Solution Suite supports both voice and data services for CDMA (code-division multiple access), CDMA2000, GSM (global system for mobile communication), GPRS (general packet radio services) and Wideband-CDMA/UMTS (universal mobile telecommunications service) networks.

"SurePay enables mobile operators to offer innovative promotions, making it easier to attract new subscribers and provide more personalization and services for end-users. This means more choices for the consumer, greater customer satisfaction and superior retention," said Roger Derrien, vice president of UMTS & Intelligent Networks product management for Lucent's Mobility Solutions Group. "With SurePay's flexibility, operators strengthen their competitive advantages by offering their customers a more comprehensive range of voice and data services."

Portugal's Vodafone Telecel is expanding its pre-paid facilities with the newest version of MiLife SurePay to help increase its pre-paid service capability to accommodate growing traffic demand. Using the solution lets Vodafone create customized services such as flexible charging plans and personalized account management options. It will be able to monitor and manage voice and data calls in real-time, ensuring accurate billing and, as a result, introduce personalized pricing plans or special offers to customers, according to usage.

New features of the SurePay Solutions Suite include the following:

  • Account Spending Limit (ASL) Service -- enables consumers to placea deposit into an account, creating a credit balance which acts as their spending limit, benefiting budget-minded consumers who wants to control post-pay spending. They may later sign up as post-pay subscribers. ASL appeals to business managers who need to provide employees with mobile service while controlling expenses and, similarly, appeals to parents who want to manage their children's spending or phone-time. The service uses a rating engine to give carriers the benefits of real-time billing while giving their customers the convenience of post-paid billing.

  • Data and Content Charging -- allows mobile operators to generate revenue from both person-to-person messaging and the delivery of information requested by customers, by integrating the information source with the MiLife(TM) SurePay e-Commerce Gateway Server(eCGS) module. It lets mobile operators charge a user's pre-paid account for both originating and terminating Short Message Services (SMS) in real-time. Operators can charge both for business content such as e-mails, URL browsing and informational SMS, and for entertainment content such as football results, game downloads, ring-tone downloads or lifestyle services.

  • e-Commerce Gateway Server (eCGS) -- provides open interfaces which allow operators to charge end-users for any type of non-voice transaction, whether for the delivery of data content, such as video clips downloaded to their terminals, audio streaming, BREW application downloads or the purchase of theater tickets. The XML-based open interface also allows operators to offer a range of recharge options to their pre-paid subscribers. For example, eCGS is being used to offer recharge options through bank ATMs and through points-of-sale at retail financial services outlets. The open XML interface of the eCGS provides relevant customer account information to third parties, while the advanced security features of the service ensure that only authorized merchants may access account information.

  • Recharge Management System -- supports real-time recharge-card validation and manages all aspects of a scratch-card life cycle, including card manufacturing, distribution and administration.

  • Customer Care System -- provides a single web-based graphical user interface to customer service representatives who equip subscribers, maintain existing subscriptions, answer customer queries, adjust account balances and generate reports.

In addition to Vodafone Telecel, MiLife(TM) SurePay® is currently deployed by E-Plus in Germany, Vodafone Omnitel in Italy, and others, providing the capacity to support more than 30 million subscribers worldwide.
