Just One Thing

3:00 PM -- Everyone touting the mantra of "any device, any network, any time" should really remember one important qualifier for so-called open access.

Any device will still mean any compatible device: If Verizon Wireless builds an LTE fourth-generation network in its newly won 700 MHz spectrum, you'll be able to run a 700 MHz LTE-compatible device on that network. You won't be able to move a GSM phone or a WiMax device or even an LTE device that runs on another frequency.

So you won't able to move to Verizon with your iPhone just yet.

It is a small detail but one that it is possible to lose sight of in the hyped-up aftermath of the auctions: Open access will still have very definite limits.
