Juniper Joins CPW Gang

8:10 AM -- Much attention is paid to the 21CN next-generation network rollout by British incumbent BT Group plc (NYSE: BT; London: BTA), but one of its main broadband rivals, Carphone Warehouse Group plc (London: CPW), is always worth keeping an eye on.

Its latest decision is to deploy Ethernet aggregation switches from Juniper Networks Inc. (NYSE: JNPR). ( See CPWN Likes Juniper.)

Carphone has built itself a sizeable position in the U.K. broadband market with more than 2.6 million DSL customers -- a 21 percent share of the DSL market, including more than 1 million customers connected to its own infrastructure, a number that's only going to rise as it migrates current wholesale users to its network. (See Carphone Hits 2.6M DSL Subs.)

So the operator has been bolstering its own network infrastructure to deal with rising volumes of bandwidth-hungry traffic.

It has access infrastructure from Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. , VOIP systems from Sonus Networks Inc. (Nasdaq: SONS), and is beefing up its backbone with optical gear from Infinera Corp. (Nasdaq: INFN). (See Brits Build Backbone With Infinera , Huawei Lands Another Euro Deal, and Carphone Uses Sonus for VOIP.)

Carphone likes to do things differently, and its network, service, and marketing decisions always provide an interesting counterpoint to BT.

We can't wait until Carphone decides to offer IPTV -- that’ll be a process worth tracking.
