SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- Juniper Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq:JNPR - News) today announced an application of the E-series platform and SDX-300 Service Deployment System for Public Wireless Local Area Networks (PWLANs). Based on the Model for Integrated Network Transformation (MINT), this unique approach transforms today's disparate, operationally-intensive PWLAN offerings from commodity Internet access to a profitable, value-added service model. The Juniper Networks PWLAN solution enables service providers to cultivate new revenue streams from the growing business and consumer demand for mobile connectivity via 802.11b (Wi-Fi) hotspots. "The current approach to building PWLANs, which requires underpowered and feature-constrained CPU-based gateways to be deployed, configured, and managed at each and every hotspot, restricts the service to basic Internet connectivity," says Kevin Dillon, director of portfolio marketing, Juniper Networks. "This significantly impacts profitability, and - as demand scales to hundreds and thousands of hot spots - it is operationally prohibitive to locate complex user and service management functions at every hotspot." The Juniper Networks PWLAN solution is deployed today in leading service provider networks. It is based on the E-series platform, the industry's leading broadband edge solution, and the SDX-300 Service Deployment System. By consolidating the user authentication and service creation functions from many hotspots into a single, hardware-based platform, service providers can readily scale the hotspot network and assure their users' experiences, continually layer new services, and reduce cost of operations. The E-series enables PWLAN providers to offer additional differentiated services such as guaranteed bandwidth, virtual private networks, Quality of Service (QoS), added security, and controlled access to premium content. The SDX-300 provides simple web-based login via service portals customized for specific users and locations, and dynamic self-selection of the additional PWLAN services through personalized web portals.
