TOKYO -- Japan Telecom is offering low-cost, tailored Virtual Private Network (VPN) solutions for corporate customers using a secure IP (Internet Protocol) solution from Nortel Networks (NYSE:NT) (TSX:NT).

The telecommunications service provider, one of Japan's largest, is using Nortel Networks Contivity Secure IP Services Gateways as the technology platform for its Internet-based ODN (Open Data Network) Managed VPN service.

Contivity is Nortel Networks purpose-built, customer premises-based IP services platform. Japan Telecom deploys Contivity Secure IP Services Gateways at ODN Managed VPN customer sites -- Contivity 1010 or 1100 for smaller customers, Contivity 1700 for medium-sized enterprises, and Contivity 2700 for larger corporations.

"We are very pleased that Japan Telecom has selected our Contivity Secure IP Services Gateways to meet the accelerating demand for managed VPN services among Japan's business community," said John Giamatteo, president, Asia Pacific, Nortel Networks. "We will continue to offer highly reliable products that support such managed services as next generation voice and multimedia, IP, and optical broadband."

The integrated capabilities of Contivity Secure IP Services Gateways -- including IPSec tunneling, stateful firewalling, PKI, authentication, directory services (LDAP), network address translation (NAT) and IP routing -- are designed to provide end-customers with more reliable and scalable network security and remote access at reduced cost. The Contivity portfolio is designed to connect remote users, branch offices, suppliers and customers with the cost and performance advantages of public IP networks and the security and control found in private networks.
