Italians Dominate Euro Innovators Top 10

If you thought Italy was only good for great food, good wine, stylish couture, and political corruption almost unequaled in the western world, then think again. Because the top end of our latest list of telecom eggheads, Top 10 Service Provider Innovators – Europe, is brimming with Latin luminaries.

Check out the list and you'll find Italian Stallions in the second, third, and fourth positions, from wireless giant Telecom Italia Mobile SpA (Milan: TIM), city service provider eBiscom, and mobile challenger Vodafone Omnitel, respectively.

But they were all beaten to the accolade of leading European innovator by stalwart IP figure Peter Lothberg, an independent consultant best known for his work with Sprint Corp. (NYSE: FON) and Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CSCO). A veteran of our Top Ten lists as well the IP development scene (see The Top Ten Movers and Shakers in Optical Networking ), he is still pushing the technology boundaries in his current role as networking visionary and "vendor basher" for Sprint (see Sprint Spurns MPLS for Global VPNs).

And he's joined in the Top Ten by two fellow Swedes, a trio of Brits (who do the Ethernet community proud), and a Spaniard from Telefònica. Yup, an innovator from a national incumbent known previously as Mañana Telecom because it was so unresponsive to customer needs. To find out who, and why, you'll need to read the article!

This means we have a European Top ten without a single German or a native of France, though both countries are represented in the "Bubbling Under: Those Who Nearly Made It" section.

So if you want to know who's hot on "the old continent" (and which Hollywood figure gets a namecheck) head on over to Light Reading's Service Provider Circle.

re: Italians Dominate Euro Innovators Top 10 Italian Telecom industry has been very receptive to the newer technologies and telecom standards. In particular they made substantial contribution to the optical networking and telecommunications network management.

re: Italians Dominate Euro Innovators Top 10 yeah, that's why they chose Marconi DWDM to build their next gen optical backbone

re: Italians Dominate Euro Innovators Top 10 Why when talking about italians you mention political corruption and when talking about Americans you do not mention the corporate frauds we discover each day.
By the way the first amplified DWDM system installed in US was made in Italy (1994)

re: Italians Dominate Euro Innovators Top 10 grazie tanto, fabius, for the message, but aren't you a bit 'sensitivo'? I mean, it's not like there haven't been legions of stories on Light Reading about the financial irregularities going down in US telecoms.
And you can't be claiming that Italy isn't at home to some well dodgy politicians, surely! After all, Berlusconi, when translated, means 'brown envelope' doesn't it? Chill out, fratello...

re: Italians Dominate Euro Innovators Top 10 Well, it's fashionable to talk about Italy only when, red brigates, mafia, the pope, or the government make or made the news, or even worse to condescendently talk about about the food or fashion. Many are not at ease to recognize some achievements not only in telecom: to name a few Marconi (on Genoa, Pisa and Latina), Pirelli Photonics, now Cisco Photonics, Telettra , now Alcatel, Italtel now Siemens have made and are making significant contributions in the fiber trasmission from STM1,4,16,64 and now 256. Surely we are not good at marketing...

re: Italians Dominate Euro Innovators Top 10 I am not sensitive but I strongly believe it is unfair. My point is simply that it is not fair to associate systematically when writing about technical or business issues one country with the bad behaviour of some politicians. By the way Clinton is well known for his economic and sex scandals but nobody is associating Bell Labs with it

re: Italians Dominate Euro Innovators Top 10 Might be worth remembering why we are talking about the Italians at all - they hold the 2nd, 3rd and 4th positions in this Top 10.

That kinda says a lot by itself, doesn't it?

And is it condescending to say Italian food is great? I have to waistline to prove that, in my case, it is an honest apparaisal....

re: Italians Dominate Euro Innovators Top 10 maybe it's just a commonplace for fun...
but it's very sad for light reading to be so closed minded in describing italy.

the godfather series is not a picture of italy,
come on...
