Is Lucent Sitting on OEM Surprises?

Neither Lucent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: LU) nor Marconi plc (Nasdaq/London: MONI) will comment on rumors that the two may be planning an OEM alliance.

Scuttlebutt about the possibility of a matchup comes hot on the heels of Lucent's decision to halt development on its core ATM multiservice switch, the TMX 880 (see Lucent Chops TMX 880). Lucent has stated that it will OEM as needed to fill demand for integrated solutions.

Could Marconi top the list of possible partners? After all, Marconi is hawking a high-end ATM multiservice switch, the BXR-48000 (see Marconi Adds 'c' to Its OC192 and Marconi's Switch Gets Tolly-fied).

A pairing's not likely, some analysts say, given that Lucent cited lack of demand in discontinuing the high-end TMX 880. "I know Lucent's been looking [for OEM partners], but I really hadn't heard about Marconi," says Sam Greenholtz, senior analyst at Communications Industry Researchers Inc. "It just doesn't make sense... Lucent has a tough enough time selling what it's got. Why put another vendor name out there if demand isn't there?"

Some skeptics, speculating that Lucent has been trying to hide its own lack of traction behind demand rhetoric, say a Marconi deal might not be so outlandish. "The TMX didn't seem to play well," says Brent Wilson, analyst at Current Analysis. Lucent might be better off to go with a partner and spin development cycles on tight integration, he says, than to struggle uphill on its own.

One source says word of a Marconi deal may have started as a suggestion in the wake of Lucent's latest cuts. "You know how these things work," said one source familiar with Lucent, who asked not to be named. "Bankers come up with an idea they hope to fund, then suddenly a rumor makes the rounds."

Still, few observers contacted for this article deny that there's a lot of talk about just how Lucent will fill the holes left in its product line -- holes made in the course of the company's ongoing "rationalization" process (see Lucent Pulls LambdaManager, Lucent Clarifies Product Strategy, and Lucent Silences SpringTide). Word is, if a Marconi deal isn't in the works, Lucent's probably planning other partnerships, given its new emphasis on services and integration.

"Lucent has to do something," says Susan Eustis, president of Wintergreen Research Inc., a telecom consultancy. Demand is growing for gear that can help carriers make the transition to MPLS and Gigabit Ethernet, she says, and Lucent needs to be able to fill the gap.

"There may be an opportunity for Marconi, but it would be one of many," says Frank Dzubeck, president of Communications Network Architects (no Website), a consultancy in Washington, D.C. Lucent's new focus on integration and services makes it likely the company will look for numerous OEM deals, he says, even in areas where its own products have failed. This strategy would help Lucent save money on development and support of "iffy" offerings, enabling it to stick to its chosen knitting. "Lucent's forte is project management," he notes.

Interestingly, when discontinuing the TMX 880, Lucent said it plans to release an ATM multiservice edge product at an unspecified future date. More grist for the partnership rumor mill?

Equipe is in Nagog Park and they would probably be a better fit for an OEM deal. Lost of old Cascade people there as well.

re: Is Lucent Sitting on OEM Surprises? Lucent did an OEM deal with Foundry for the L4-7 technology, nothing much came of it. I doubt Lucent OEMing anyone else will amount to much either. There is no stability in their enterprise group, merely people getting a paycheck and sending out their resumes. Too bad as I do own alot of LU stock. Thank god they don't have the wherewithall to buy an enterprise manufacturer/sales organization. Of course Extreme might make a good acquisition for Lucent to gain 2 tier and channel sales direction.


The switching vendor landscape is very crowded, but according to its latest report ("Enterprise LAN Switching: Who is Number Two?"), the Yankee Group believes that in three to five years consolidation will leave clear number-two players in the various markets. Foundry Networks will be the switching alternative for companies seeking a best-of-breed, high-end infrastructure; Nortel Networks is the only vendor other than Cisco that can provide a complete solution for small businesses through large enterprises; and 3Com will continue to dominate the SME space. If LU had listened to the OEM reseller results the last time they tried to break into the data space ('96) with the likes of GDC / Kentrox / Cascade / Bay, they never would have gone to the next phase to build their own with organic investments and startup acquisitions. With the cycle about to repeat itself, I doubt any lessons learned will prevail. Its simply a management failure of magnanamous proportions.

With the cycle about to repeat itself, I doubt any lessons learned will prevail. Its simply a management failure of magnanamous proportions.

Is this the same guy that made the billiant decision to replace OZ with the NX? The same person who thought if they just put a little lipstick on that pig, Verizon would buy it? Sheeesh!

If we assume that Lucent is incapable of producing a next gen switch internally, then they have no other choice. In fact, this would not be bad strategy, since there is some great start up technology out there for the taking. Anyone with have a brain would have done this a year ago.

Now I find that hard to believe. You are talking major architectural overhaul, starting with the GX CLOS switch fabric. I can't imagine LU having the wherewithall to pull it off in our lifetime.

History quiz - does anyone remember the only homegrown LU ATM switch? What was it called, who was the designer (hint - Bell Labs), and was it ever deployed?

I doubt anyone still working at LU knows the answer.

Given what you said earlier in your message, what evidence do you have that LU management could get this done, even assuming they still have the required technical expertise in-house? (and that's a big assumption)

I'm not saying that LU (SpringTide/TMX) managment could get this done, it's the engineers who HAVE proposed this solution and have a proven track record and delivered for real products in the market.

Westford does have the expertise, it's just a matter of the political agendas that will not see this happen. Just ask the current Westford GM. He's dead set against the legacy products and we'll see a SpringTide II on there hands. Once again, LU managment will show that they still DO NOT listen to the customer.

The ONLY reaqson why LU is still in the Data business is because the legacy CBX/GX products are still #1 and #2 in the market. LU does not and will not succeed in the Data market unless they take off the blinders and realize that all their customers want right now are new line cards abd SW features to improve scaling and performance. They do not want another box to install at this time or for the next 18-24 mos.

When the IP/MPLS story is mature and ready to fully integrate and generate real revenue with ATM, then they'll be ready to buy new boxes.

Listen up Lucent, do the right thing and upgrade the CBX/GX with next-gen type features. Do it all "god boxes" in Telesto won't do it.

re: Is Lucent Sitting on OEM Surprises? higher:) Sorry, I meant Fore Systems, before Marconi bought them. Think about what gap the esx-2400/4800 product was suppose to fill, but failed big time!! I should know I had to bail out many healthcare providers that bought the product with false hopes of replacing the old PH's.
