iPhone VOIP Arrives

4:15 PM -- Well, that didn't take too long, did it? TruPhone is claiming -- and demonstrating -- the first voice-over-WiFi client for the Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone.

TruPhone is claiming that it has worked up a system that can swap between a WiFi and cellular connection without unlocking the SIM card, something that is deeply frowned on by Apple and its carrier partners. (See Apple: Don't Unlock the iPhone.)

Still, I can't imagine the prospect of free WiFi calls being particularly popular with either Apple or AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T). Both have a vested interest in maximizing revenue returns on the iPhone service. (See Peeling Back Apple's iPhone Revenue.)

Such an application would also make the iPhone more of a rival for T-Mobile US Inc. 's [email protected] service. (See BlackBerry @Home.)

re: iPhone VOIP Arrives Spontaneuos idea: Can the TruPhone client handle any VoIP - I mean: could an intersted user apply his T-Mobile VoIP plan with this AS WELL?
