The Boy From Ipanema

2:35 PM -- "Tall and tan and young and lovely" is how "The Girl From Ipanema" is described in the "bossa nova" classic ditty, but it's probably (we're guessing) not something Reza Mahdavi, the new president at Ipanema Technologies , would put on his CV. (See Ipanema Hires Cisco Exec.)

It's an appointment that highlights Ipanmea's growing influence in the carrier services space, as Mahdavi was quite a senior, and experienced, executive in the Cisco ranks.

Ipanema, as well as having probably the coolest name in the telecom vendor community, is gaining a lot of traction with its WAN optimization platform, which now underpins managed services being offered by the likes of Orange Business Services -- one of the biggest hitters in the international VPN market -- Swisscom AG (NYSE: SCM), and Cable and Wireless plc (NYSE: CWP). (See Orange Business Boosts SLAs, C&W Uses Ipanema, and Swisscom Deploys Ipanema.)

As carriers look for new ways to pin down large enterprise customers and find new revenue streams, Ipanema's name might become as familiar as that decidedly 1960s tune... Take it away, maestro!
