Juniper's Software Plan

6:00 PM -- SAN JOSE, Calif. -- From today's Juniper Networks Inc. (NYSE: JNPR) analyst day, here's a software timeframe, as presented by Manoj Leelanivas, executive vice president of Junos Ready Software.

Table 1: Juniper's Software Timetable
Thing Function Timeframe
Junos Space Software platform for network applications, including things like provisioning and monitoring. Opens the possibility of third-party applications. SDKs launching late 2010 or early 2011
Junos Pulse Resides on clients, providing identity and security; possibly plays a role in policy Available now as an iPhone app
Junos Pulse SDK Letting software developers work with Pulse Deliver in 2012
A developer program Creation of a community. Preferably one that attends developer events with cool giveaways. Launch in 2011
Source: Juniper Networks

Why should you care? Because all this software stuff -- especially the invitation for customers or independent software developers to create their own applications -- is a huge part of how Juniper intends to stand out against Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU), Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CSCO), and Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. In the long term, this could be as big to Juniper's future as the latest big numbers on the latest big router.

Junos Space is definitely available now; I believe the "early 2011" was referring to 3rd party apps released on top of the Space SDK.

Quick note that the forward-looking dates are somewhat confusing for at least me, as Juniper already pushes (as current capabilities) their app developer program, SDK, Pulse, Space, etc.

Could be.  I'll try to confirm with Juniper later today.  (Or maybe they'll see this and chime in themselves, hint hint.)
