If Juniper Were Apple

Craig Matsumoto

11:45 AM -- "Juniper Networks Inc. (NYSE: JNPR) should look more like Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL)."

Really? Really?

That's a gem of a quote from CRN earlier this week. It's from an unnamed reseller, in an article about how resellers are warming up the new-look Juniper under CEO Kevin Johnson. (See The New Juniper and Photos: Juniper HQ.)

To be fair, I've left part of the sentence out; the exec was saying Juniper should set itself apart as a brand, and not market itself as Yet Another Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CSCO) or HP Inc. (NYSE: HPQ).

But the reseller doesn't elaborate on how Juniper could be more Apple-like. So let's do it for him: Juniper could...

  • Set up shop in the mall!

  • Offer overpriced products that people snap up for fashion's sake, even if they break easily!

  • Close up the software, and then go criticize other people for not being open!

It's the day before a three-day weekend in the United States and the UK. Go on. Make up your own, and post it to the message board below.

(Full disclosure: CRN, like Light Reading is owned by United Business Media LLC, although it's in a different division.)

I thought they were driving at going to a specific market segment finding a way of making the consumers of their devices smug and because of that paying twice what they needed to so that the GM of the products are high.  So, that they sell less but at high GMs and then the Juniper customers can sneer at the Cisco customers as pedestrian.

Then somebody else comes in to play Google and upset the entire Apple cart (pun intended).

"There's a broadband services router or multi-access gateway for that" doesn't roll off the tongue quite as nicely.

Shower environments - like the "Catholic Girls in Trouble" segment from Kentucky Fried Movie?

"there's a jRouter for that" (Sounds too much like grouting, invoking images of things that occur in shower environments.  Ick.)

Juniper needs a charismatic cult leader. Somebody who can move global markets with a well-timed word or gesture. Somebody who inspires irrational zealotry with minimal effort. Somebody who can negotiate an insanely rich deal that's completely hostile to the interests of his or her loyal followers, and not catch a even whiff of grief about it. Somebody who Needs No Introduction.

I wonder what Jack Welch is up to.

Pure gold! Get Lauren Flaherty on the phone, stat!

(Even better when you combine it with "rolls off the tongue"...)

The smugness, of course!  What better way to generate shareholder value!
