IBM & Proxim: MANly Friends

IBM Global Services and Proxim Corp. (Nasdaq: PROX) have sneaked out a joint customer win this week that marks the beginning of a resale agreement between the two companies (see School District Picks Proxim).

“The primary focus of the relationship is our Tsunami Multipoint system, which today is our MP.11 family, with our Tsunami MP.16 WiMax solutions becoming an additional major focus upon availability in 2005,” says Proxim’s VP of marketing, Ben Gibson (see Proxim's WiMax Path).

The pair plan to focus on municipal broadband wireless networks (including public safety deployments), security and surveillance applications, and higher educational establishments.

The partnership could be good news for Proxim as it starts to face increased competition from larger players such as Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CSCO) and Motorola Inc. (NYSE: MOT) in the wireless MAN space.

The deal appears to represent IBM's first real move into this particular wireless market, although Gibson says the pair have been working together for a while.

“Jointly we had decided to not publicly announce the relationship until we were ready to go to market together, which is essentially now.”
