SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Virata® Corporation (Nasdaq: VRTA), a leading semiconductor and software supplier for broadband equipment manufacturers, today announced that Hyperchip™, Inc. – the Petabit Routing Company™ – has selected its MPLS (Multi-Protocol Label Switching) and OSPF-TE (Open Shortest Path First) software for Hyperchip’s newest petabit router family. Hyperchip has partnered with industry leaders such as Nortel Networks, IBM Microelectronics and Xilinx to combine its leading-edge architecture with their respective technologies to enhance switching and routing scalability, which are significant issues in today’s networks. By incorporating Virata’s MPLS and OSPF traffic engineering extensions, Hyperchip is able to further strengthen a network’s ability to support voice and data traffic, quickly and efficiently.

“Consumption of bandwidth has increased in recent years due to the success of DSL, falling end-user prices and the growth of the Internet and multimedia services,” said Steve Makgill, vice president of software marketing for Virata Corporation. “Companies like Hyperchip are working aggressively to deliver solutions that will support this surge in network traffic. In order to do so, they need advanced networking software, such as Virata’s MPLS and OSPF. These routing protocols are critical to the successful development of next-generation networks that support ever-increasing amounts of Internet traffic. We are pleased to have Hyperchip join our growing list of leading edge networking companies using our software solutions.”
