SOPHIA-ANTIPOLIS, France -- The 5th meeting of the ETSI committee TISPAN will be held at ETSI from the 17th to the 21st January 2005. At this time of intense interest in FMC (Fixed Mobile Convergence) and NGN (Next Generation Networks) - two acronyms creating much of the buzz within the telecoms marketplace - the 5th Meeting will be concentrating on the preparation of Release 1 of the TISPAN_NGN standard, for present and future converged networks.

TISPAN is working closely with all of the standards “players” for future/next generation networks as part of the increasing global effort that includes ETSI liaison with 3GPP, ATIS, the ITU-T and the IETF as well as other important fora, including the DSL Forum and the MPLS and Frame Relay Alliance (MFA).

A sign of the increased global cooperation and the internationalization of the work is the recent decision by Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd., Shenzhen, China, to support the work of TISPAN by providing essential expertise to the Technical Report under development on “Requirements for Bearer Control in Next Generation Networks”.

The selection of Tina TSOU (Ting ZOU), of Huawei Technologies, by the TISPAN Working Group on NGN Architecture (TISPAN WG-2), represents the first occasion where a Technical Expert from China has been selected as Rapporteur for an ETSI Technical Report within the NGN standards area.

Richard Brennan, ETSI TISPAN Vice-Chair, and TISPAN WG-2 Chair said;

"The work at TISPAN has been helped by the active participation and technical contributions of Huawei, and we are pleased that they have chosen to leverage the industry leadership of ETSI TISPAN as a valuable part of their own standards process."

At the ETSI General Assembly held in Nice, France on the 30th November-1st December, the ETSI Membership has confirmed the high importance of TISPAN’s work and has unanimously agreed that extra technical resources are to be allocated to support the TISPAN Work Program with immediate effect.

Karl Heinz Rosenbrock, the ETSI Director General, stated;

“In ETSI we have a clear understanding of what we shall deliver through the work of TISPAN and as a part of the 3G Partnership Project. The key driver is the need for Interoperability – I believe that this paramount goal will drive all parties to contribute to our work and very soon share the benefits of having one set of standards for the next generation of fixed/mobile converged networks. The ETSI General Assembly has confirmed that this project is at the top of our list of priorities”.
