Handset Growth Slows

2:30 PM -- Gartner Inc. lowered its handset growth forecast for this year to 10-11 percent, down from its previous estimates that 10-15 percent more handsets would be sold this year. According to Gartner, the global economic slowdown is starting to affect emerging markets as well as mature markets. Last year, handset volumes grew 16 percent year-on-year.

Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK) reports second quarter results on Thursday this week, and Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications will report its second quarter results on Friday, which could provide a clearer view of what the second half of the year will be like for handset sales.
