Google Airspace II

9:20 AM -- Is it official yet that Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) has too much money? It is now ponying up $30 million for the X Prize contest to send a robot to the moon.

You could argue it's more productive than spending the money on a baseball stadium or on another fancy cafeteria. You've already got some people saying NASA should give up the moon obsession; maybe private funding is the better way to get to the moon, considering there's little guarantee of getting anything useful out of it.

Of course, Google might not have to give out any of the cash, in which case the whole thing would end up being a self-indulgent publicity stunt. Not that anyone would accuse Google of anything like that.

Wired has the longer explanation of how this came to be.

(If you get a page saying "Nag Strip," just wait 30 seconds, and the proper cartoon will appear.)
