Get Ready for Mobile World Congress

4:15 PM -- I expect the flash to be well and truly back at next week's Mobile World Congress show in Barcelona.

The massive European tradeshow has had a slightly downbeat air in the last couple of years as the industry waded through the recession. The crowds we saw at CES at Vegas in January suggests that the wireless business is well ready to shake off recession times and the MWC show should cement this.

So look for champagne and tiny snacks to be plentiful at the evening events. Light Reading Mobile will be there in force and we're expecting to see a few key trends emerge at the show:

  • Base stations will get smaller and smarter
  • LTE will spread
  • Androids will get cheaper
  • Tablets will be everywhere

I'm also wondering there be a fresh emphasis on smarter applications as more and more video arrives on mobile networks. Certainly there has been more talk about smarter traffic management on the network side.

Let us know what you're hoping to see on the message board below.

I agree about a lot of new capability in smarter traffic management.  Lightreading covered SmartSwitch, an intelligent traffic manager client for mobile devices (http://www.lightreading.com/document.asp?doc_id=203606)

I will be at MWC and can give a demo to anyone interested.

Dan, you're right. The volume of preshow outreach and spin is definitely an indicator that Mobile World Congress is back to pre-recession excitement levels.
