SAN JOSE, Calif. and ROTTERDAM, The Netherlands -- Redback Networks Inc. (NASDAQ: RBAK), a leading provider of next-generation networking equipment purpose-built for the edge of the network, today announced that it is supplying the Redback® SMS™ platform of subscriber management systems to German City carrier WOBCOM. The solution will be used to provide high-speed Internet access and offer virtual private network (VPN) services to WOBCOM's residential and business customers. With its range of high-speed broadband access services for accessing the Internet, WOBCOM is primarily focusing on residential and business customers in and around Wolfsburg who have so far connected to the Internet using either analogue or ISDN technologies. Redback's SMS solution provides the carrier with the necessary technological support, particularly to allocate users the required bandwidth and to aggregate and manage the full diversity of broadband subscriber traffic.Furthermore, using Redback's unique multiple context feature will enable WOBCOM to create VPN access for each business customer, provisioned according to the relevant service agreement. Information about each user session is then automatically sent from the SMS via a standard RADIUS interface to the billing system, for accurate and timely billing. In addition, the SMS solution is used as a starting point for supplying WOBCOM's accounting server with all the necessary data for each online session in order to ensure correct and timely billing for services.Hans-Jürgen Dargel, technical director of WOBCOM, explains: "We needed an aggregation platform that would enable us to build high performance, functionality and user friendliness into all our services, making them as attractive as possible to prospective users. As a regional carrier working to build market share in a specific area, Redback offered us a solution that fits WOBCOM's existing infrastructure and budget but can grow with us and scale to support larger volumes of subscribers without sacrificing service levels or performance".Redback Networks Inc.
