Sprint Launches Ethernet Wavelength Services

Sprint is formally rolling out Ethernet wavelength services at speeds up to 100 Gbit/s, following through on a rollout hinted at when it announced a 100G long-haul deployment between Chicago and Fort Worth, Tex., earlier this month (See Sprint's 400G Holding in Test Pattern.)

Sprint Corp. (NYSE: S)'s Ethernet Wave Service is now available in 88 US markets, and the carrier pledged to expand availability throughout next year. Though Sprint has offered, and still offers, connectivity at OC-192 and OC-768, the Ethernet version of those speeds -- 10G and 40G Ethernet wavelengths -- will appeal to enterprise customers who want Ethernet transport between datacenters where they now have Ethernet storage capabilities, says Mike McRoberts, director of product management and development at Sprint.

"If a customer needs Ethernet hand-off capability at higher speeds than that, we now know we can do that at 100G," McRoberts told us. "Before, we couldn't go beyond OC-768." He said most of the immediate customer activity will involve the 10G and 40G wavelengths, however.

Also, the wavelength services are expected to appeal to regional carriers that have heavily deployed Ethernet in their metro markets, and are in need of a long-haul backbone partner. The announcement comes as other carriers of all types have been busily ramping up their Ethernet wavelength services. (See: tw telecom Intros 40GE, 100GE Services.)

Re: Back in the OC Sprint said its edge is customer care and service. I somehow imagine, however, that others are laying claim to that advantage, too.

Re: Back in the OC If everyone's doing this, what is the differentiation factor? Does any one have an edge?

Back in the OC I have been writing/hearing so much about 10G/40G/100G lately that when Mike McRoberts mentioned OC-192, it was like hearing about an old friend.
