Although the macro-economy remains sluggish, the Expo is shaping up to be one of our largest shows ever. The momentum building behind this year’s show is directly related to Ethernet’s compelling value. As we will highlight during the Expo, Carrier Ethernet truly has emerged as the “technology of choice” for delivering flexible, affordable, high-performance services tailored to meet the diverse needs of business, consumer, and mobile users.
Main topics. Ethernet Expo comprises three major topics covered during two days:
1) Carrier Ethernet services for enterprise users
2) Carrier Ethernet wholesale services and interconnection
3) Carrier Ethernet converged network solutions that support business services, consumer triple-play/VoD services, and mobile backhaul applications
Service providers. Last year’s event broke a Light Reading record in terms of telecom operator and MSO registration, attendance, and direct participation in keynotes and presentations. With an expanded focus on wholesale services and interconnection, we expect all of the service provider-related figures to climb in 2010. We already have 20 service providers and exchange players lined up to speak at this year’s show, and we expect more to hop onboard in the run-up to the event. This year’s Expo has a “Who’s Who” list of movers-and-shakers in the Ethernet market, including multiple CTOs as well as numerous executives, directors, and senior managers. Companies with speakers include: AboveNet, AT&T, BT, CENX, Covad Wholesale, FiberTower, Global Crossing, Interoute, IP Only, Level 3, Neutral Tandem, NTT America, Optimum Lightpath, Qwest Wholesale, RCN Metro, telx, tw telecom, Verizon, Verizon Business, and XO.
Global interconnection demonstration. In collaboration with Light Reading, European Advanced Networking Test Center AG (EANTC) is organizing a service provider interoperability test and showcase program that will focus on: 1) demonstrating a broad interconnect footprint stretching from Europe into North America; 2) looking into how operators can take advantage of each other’s Ethernet OAM tools in order to monitor the end-to-end service; 3) verifying bandwidth profiles against expected data rates; and 4) checking the service-level agreement (SLA) for each class of service (CoS). Service providers and exchange players participating in the interconnection demo include: Belgacom, Equinix, Expereo, TeraGate, Tinet, and Vega.
Enterprises. A large portion of the content on Day 1 of the Expo will be focused on the topic of Ethernet services for business end-users. This includes keynotes and sessions related to cloud services, Ethernet business services innovation, and low-latency solutions for financial and other verticals, as well as a CTO/senior technologist roundtable exploring the near-term and long-term development of the Ethernet services industry. The Expo offers a unique opportunity for enterprise CIOs and their staffs to keep up with the latest Ethernet service and technology trends that can help them control communications costs and drive productivity.
Carrier Ethernet network solutions suppliers. The leading suppliers of next-generation Carrier Ethernet solutions will be participating in this year’s show. These include providers of Carrier Ethernet service edge routers, Carrier Ethernet switch/routers, Carrier Ethernet access platforms, Ethernet-friendly packet optical products, and service management solutions. At least 34 Carrier Ethernet network solutions providers will have representatives at this year’s show.
Investors and financial analysts. We had a significant number of professionals from the investor and financial analyst communities attend last year, and we encourage folks from the financial community to take advantage of this unique opportunity to gain valuable insight regarding emerging trends and hot technology topics – including the evolution of the Carrier Ethernet and packet optical markets as well as the 100-GigE ecosystem.
Press and industry analysts. Light Reading and Heavy Reading are also pleased to invite our press and industry research peers to attend Ethernet Expo again. We are delighted to have experienced industry analysts Michael Howard from Infonetics Research Inc. and Erin Dunne from Vertical Systems Group share their insights during an analyst wrap-up panel at the show.
MEF. The MEF will have a Day 2 keynote providing an update on the organization’s activities that are helping drive industry cooperation and overall market growth.
Stay tuned for more updates on the Ethernet Expo as well as Question & Answer columns with companies participating in the show. One is already up: Q&A: Optimum Lightpath.
