PETALUMA, Calif. -- Turin Networks, a global provider of metro service edge equipment for wireline, wireless, MSO and private networks, today announced the release of the Traverse PacketEdge™ 1200 (TPE-1200), a carrier-class service edge aggregation platform that enables the delivery of Ethernet VPN services over existing copper access networks. By leveraging the broadly deployed T1 infrastructure, the TPE-1200 delivers service providers significant CapEx and OpEx savings compared to alternative approaches for deploying Ethernet over copper.

According to leading market research firm Vertical Systems Group, fiber access currently extends to less than 14% of business sites in the US. This “last mile” of the carrier network is dominated by copper access, and T1 is the most widely used access network technology for business data connectivity. Using Turin’s Traverse PacketEdge 1200, service providers are able to leverage existing T1 facilities to deliver new revenue generating Ethernet VPN services to business customers at rates of up to 12 Mbps.

The TPE-1200 enables service providers to efficiently aggregate up to 8 bonded T1 circuits for subscriber Internet access and use any portion of that bandwidth to also offer Ethernet VPN services (both E-Line and E-LAN). Powerful and cost-effective, the TPE-1200 provides high-density Ethernet/IP edge aggregation at a fraction of the cost to similar functions available in edge routers, and supports up to 336 Ethernet VPNs in a fully protected, compact 2RU high shelf – ideal for space-constrained co-location facilities.
