STOCKHOLM -- Transmode, a leading provider of Optical Networking Solutions has extended its industry leading Intelligent WDM (iWDMTM) solutions with the addition of fully integrated Layer 2 Ethernet Demarcation and Aggregation functionality.

The newly launched Transmode Ethernet Demarcation Unit (EDU) provides users with Carrier Class Ethernet services as defined by the Metro Ethernet Forum directly from their existing WDM infrastructure. This enables operators to quickly and simply take full advantage of the rapid growth in demand for advanced Ethernet services from enterprises and other operators.

As a plug-in unit for the highly successful TM-Series, the unit extends the existing networking flexibility into Layer 2 with Aggregation, Demarcation, Classification and Quality of Service (QoS) Management of Ethernet services. By combining Layer 1 transport with Layer 2 service delivery and management, the new unit can provide great savings in space and power and can greatly reduce network complexity.

The EDU is available now and is already deployed with multiple customers, including two recent new customer wins in Germany. The EDU is the first in a series of Transmode TM-Series Layer 2 iWDM plug in units that provide users with fully integrated layer 2 Ethernet solutions.

"By deploying an integrated iWDM Optical and Ethernet solution from Transmode our customers are able to greatly simplify their network and Ethernet service delivery" said Magnus Öberg, Transmode's CTO. "The Transmode EDU allows these customers to rapidly expand their Ethernet service offerings directly from the optical platform without the requirement for third party demarcation units. In addition, operators can reduce the requirements for overall network routing or switching capacity at Layer 2/3 nodes as traffic can be aggregated and classified at the entry point to the network before it hits these expensive network elements."
