PBT Means What?

4:30 AM -- PARIS -- Wherever you go these days, people are talking about PBT, the controversial new "flavor" of Ethernet that's being pushed hard by Nortel Networks Ltd. and supported by BT Group plc (NYSE: BT; London: BTA). (See BT Likes Nortel's New Ethernet Flavor and BT Rethinks 21CN Core Strategy.)

It didn't take long for the topic to crop up here at the Broadband World Forum Europe event. There was I, thinking that PBT stood for Provider Backbone Transport.

But I was swiftly corrected by an executive from a large European vendor.

"I heard it stands for Proposition for British Telecom," says the executive with deadpan delivery.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

re: PBT Means What? PBT = Profit Before Tax

but since most of the Nortel executives haven't seen any for such a long time the orginial acronym has fallen into disuse and they have decided to re-use again...

re: PBT Means What? Amazing all this talk about PBT.
One lesson can be learned: For pushing a new technology into BT it's probably wise to include "BT" somewhere in the name (and avoid stuff like FT, DT, NTT,...) Therefore I see potential problems for pushing FTTx into BT... Bad luck for the optics guys...

PS: An alternative meaning for PBT can be found witht a google search. Third search result: PBT= Persistent Bioaccumulative and Toxic.

NOT AT ALL!! what about

FTTBT = fiber to the basement terminal

As for PBT, Light Reading news editor Phil Harvey came up with a nice one this week:

Peanut Butter Toffee

Maybe Nortel could sell that too!
