Juniper's Ex-EX Exec

3:05 PM -- Hitesh Sheth, the Juniper Networks Inc. (NYSE: JNPR) executive prominent in the company's entrance into Ethernet switching, is going into the wireless business.

Aruba Networks Inc. (Nasdaq: ARUN) announced early this morning that it's plucked Sheth to be its first chief operating officer, reporting to CEO Dominic Orr. (See Juniper Exec Sails for Aruba.) We haven't talked with Sheth yet about why he jumped ship, but the chance for a CxO position seems like a pretty good motivation.

Sheth was in the spotlight when Juniper made its long-awaited jump into Layer 2 Ethernet, launching the EX line of switches in January 2008. (See Feature Story: Juniper's Enterprise Vision.) As vice president of the platforms group at the time, he'd been charged with building the EX line in secret. During the two years of development, Juniper kept mum about the product, even as analysts nagged the company about lacking an Ethernet strategy. (See Juniper Gains Ethernet Mojo.)

(As an aside: Juniper is now taking some flak for lacking a packet-optical transport system (P-OTS) and having no announced plans to build one. Hmm... At least one reader seems to think Juniper has something up its sleeve.)
