SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Hitachi Communication Technologies America, Inc. (HCTA), the only vendor offering a comprehensive line of EPON, DePON, MW-PON, and RFoG equipment, today announced the availability of 10G EPON and 10G DePON Optical Network Units and Line cards for the Salira product line. These new offerings give cable operators a fiber access infrastructure capable of supporting the bandwidth needed for today’s applications. HDTV, 3DTV, videoconferencing, cloud computing, rich media files, gaming, transparent LAN services, MEF services, and other business applications are straining existing access technologies. Increasing bandwidth with other solutions has proven expensive for use in wide-scale deployments. However, Hitachi’s 10Gpbs DePON offers the combination of high bandwidth, lower cost, and effective service control required for profitable high-volume business and residential services.

HCTA’s pioneering work on integrating DOCSIS management with the IEEE GEPON physical layer has paved the way for DOCSIS control of this new 10Gbps infrastructure. Reusing DOCSIS management with 10Gpbs fiber access is part of Hitachi’s strategy of leveraging existing standards based equipment for an efficient migration from HFC to fiber access. The IEEE 802.3av standard supports symmetrical 10Gbps transmission or 10Gbps downstream and 1Gbps upstream. The wavelengths used in 10G-EPON are allocated with the goal of ensuring coexistence with existing GEPON and RF video to enable support for symmetric 10Gbps ONUs, asymmetric 10Gbps/Gbps ONUs, and symmetric Gbps ONUs,as well as radio frequency (RF) video overlay on the same optical distribution network .

Hitachi equipment supports one of the largest cable operator based EPON networks in the US. Experience with this deployment shows that 10GEPON has the bandwidth and density capable of supporting the services that business and residential subscribers demand at a cost that justifies the investment. Hitachi is a contributor to the IEEE 10GEPON standard and has a leading role in SIEPON and other standards efforts aimed at integrating DOCSIS and EPON as well as creating interoperability of EPON equipment.
