NEW YORK -- Ethernet Expo Americas 2010 -- Overture Networks Inc. launched two new edge platforms this week. The ISG 400 is a pizza-box Ethernet-over-Sonet/SDH system with the interfaces to migrate to pure Ethernet later. The ISG 4800 is a small chassis with three slots for optical Ethernet options that go up to two 10Gbit/s interfaces. (See Overture Makes 10GigE Music.)

Why this is important: Both boxes, especially the 4800, represent interesting new directions for Overture. It's expanding beyond its access and aggregation nest and into edge networks. Moreover, the company built its reputation on doing Ethernet over TDM, but the 4800 has nothing but optical Ethernet interfaces. It's part of a strategy to become better known as a complete Ethernet provider and not a TDM-transition specialist, says Mark Durrett, director of marketing.
