ECI, Operax Hit Rome

5:50 PM -- Two news announcements out of Italy caught our eye today. First, ECI Telecom Ltd. finally broke into a new European Tier 1 account with its access products, scoring a remote DSLAM deal with Telecom Italia (TIM) . (See Telecom Italia Deploys ECI.)

ECI, which boasts Deutsche Telekom AG (NYSE: DT) and Orange (NYSE: FTE) as its two main access customers, has struggled to add other European scalps, so the deal with the Italian incumbent shows there's demand elsewhere for the Israel vendor's DSL gear.

Second, policy management specialist Operax AB has finally gone public about its trial with Telecom Italia, an engagement that Light Reading revealed back in May 2006. (See Operax Completes TI Trial and Sources: Operax Scores With Tier 1 Carriers.)

Now lets see if the Swedish firm can turn that trial into a commercial deployment. That's a different trick altogether.
