DoubleClick Double-Take

2:30 PM -- The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is opening an antitrust investigation on the Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) offer to buy DoubleClick. The New York Times broke the story early this morning, with the AP confirming it hours later.

The deal could make Google a powerful gatekeeper, given how much it would know about you and your Web activities. The FTC will be looking at whether that's good for the ad industry.

The bigger question -- whether it's good for one company to have all that knowledge -- is getting asked by folks like the Electronic Frontier Foundation but probably won't make the FTC's agenda.
