AMERSHAM, U.K. -- Detica Group plc (“Detica” or “the Group”), the specialist IT consultancy, today announces the launch of StreamShield Networks Limited (“StreamShield” or “the Company”), Detica’s new internet content security subsidiary. StreamShield is born out of Detica’s expertise in the fields of ultra-high speed communications and IT security and is expected to be the first company to offer integrated, internet-based protection against a wide variety of threats for both email and real-time internet applications.

Key points

  • StreamShield represents a radical new approach to the provision of internet content security by identifying and blocking threats (such as viruses, worms, other forms of malware, spam, phishing scams and abusive content) within service providers’ and operators’ networks before the content is delivered to their subscribers.

  • StreamShield’s high-performance technology will enable internet-based protection to be extended beyond email to real-time applications such as web browsing, instant messaging and peer-to-peer file sharing.

  • To achieve this within service provider and operator networks, StreamShield is developing a revolutionary new silicon-based content security engine called StreamScan. StreamScan overcomes the scalability limitations of current software and network appliance technologies which are primarily designed for deployment on customer premises rather than by service providers within the internet. It does this by processing network traffic in real-time at speeds believed to be over 100 times faster than currently deployed technologies.

StreamShield is bringing its technology to market over the coming months in two commercial offerings:

  • The StreamShield Content Security Gateway (“CSG”) has been designed as a hardware-based networking product for deployment inside service providers’ and operators’ networks. This carrier-class product will clean network traffic in real-time at multi-gigabit speeds, so that service providers and operators can offer their business and residential customers a high-value, highly differentiated clean and safe internet service. The CSG is expected to enter trials in the first half of calendar 2005.

  • StreamShield Protector, which is launched today, is a fully hosted, managed service for resale by service providers to business customers and provides integrated internet-based protection for both web and email. The service blocks viruses in web and email traffic, stops spam, and limits access to sites that fall outside of the customer’s internet usage policies. StreamShield Protector will be available from October 2004.

Commenting today Tom Black, Chief Executive of Detica and Chairman of StreamShield, said:

“Content security is one of the most dynamic and fast growing markets in the IT industry today and the StreamShield proposition brings tremendous benefits to ISPs, carriers and mobile operators looking to deliver safe, high-value services to their customers. Our StreamScan silicon technology builds upon intellectual property developed within Detica over a number of years and will leapfrog the current generation of content security technologies. It will allow us to meet the real-time performance and scalability requirements of the most demanding service provider networks.”

“Initial discussions with significant UK corporates, network operators and ISPs have been encouraging. However, we believe that caution is required when trying to predict the growth profile of this very early stage business. We have already announced the expected level of investment expenditure for the year ended 31 March 2005 as £2.5 million. In the year ending 31 March 2006, we expect StreamShield to generate modest revenues while investment in the business continues. The Board expects StreamShield to move into profit thereafter.”

On Detica Group’s current trading he added:

“At the time of Detica’s preliminary results in May, the Board indicated that the outlook for Detica’s core business remained positive and that we were confident about our ability to perform well again in the current year. We confirm that the Group has continued to trade strongly since then. Detica will announce interim results for the six months ended 30 September 2004 on 23 November 2004.”
