Dell's Battery Burnout

Dell Technologies (Nasdaq: DELL) is recalling batteries installed in several popular laptop lines in a move that could potentially affect millions of mobile enterprise users.

The firm has put a notice on its Website saying that Dell-branded batteries -- with cells built by Sony Corp. (NYSE: SNE) between April 1, 2004 and July 18, 2006 -- used in its Latitude, Inspiron, XPS, and Precision Mobile Workstation notebook computers could overheat and possibly catch fire. The firm says it is working with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and other regulatory agencies to voluntarily recall and offer free replacements for these batteries.

The notice covers over 4 million batteries -- making it the largest recall of its kind on record. Although it is hardly the first for Dell, which also made similar but smaller recalls in 2005 and earlier.

Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) also got in on the act recently, issuing a recall of batteries for its new 15-inch Macbook Pro. You can check if your laptop is part of the Dell recall here.
