Ciena's PBB-TE Play
The question came up because last week at the Light Reading's Optical Expo, Ciena product marketing manager Andy McCormick said that his company found itself supporting PBB-TE more than competing technologies, due to market demand. (See Ciena Falls in PBT Camp.)
Rathore says that his company "remains relatively agnostic about which is a better way to go" but notes that there is a key difference if one looks at Ciena's customer base and the number of people supporting PBB-TE versus T-MPLS.
"BT Group plc (NYSE: BT; London: BTA) is a huge customer of ours, and they support PBB-TE, so obviously we're going to do whatever we have to, to support that camp," he says.
"We have to take our cues from the market, and the market right now is telling us that they like PBB-TE and that's the solution they prefer at this point. I haven't seen very many customers who are standing up and saying, 'You know, I really want this T-MPLS in my network.' "
Because both PBB-TE and T-MPLS are in the early stages of the standardization process, Rathore doesn't think either has an advantage in terms of technology.
As a result, he says, "We're going to let our customers make the decision for us -- and the customers that pay us the most money are the ones that we are going to pay attention to the most."
