IRVINE, Calif. -- Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM - News), the leading provider of silicon solutions enabling broadband communications, today announced that Japanese customers NEC Infrontia Corporation (NEC-i), Hitachi Communication Technologies, Ltd., and Iwatsu Electric are shipping in volume enterprise IP (Internet Protocol) phones that use the Broadcom® BCM1100 and BCM1101 IP phone engines.

The BCM1100 and BCM1101 are part of Broadcom's family of highly integrated silicon solutions for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) terminal applications, including enterprise IP phones and residential terminal adapters. The integration and performance achieved in Broadcom's family of VoIP chips are enabling PBX (Private Branch Exchange) and KTS (Key Telephone System) vendors to bring powerful second-generation IP phones to market more quickly and cost effectively than previously possible. These new phones range from highly advanced phones, offering features not possible on legacy TDM- based PBX phones, to low-cost basic phones that look and feel much like legacy entry-level PBX phones, and are influencing the accelerated growth of VoIP in Japan.

"Enterprise IP phone shipments in Japan are expected to grow at 150-250% per year from 2004 to 2007," said Tsunehiro Tosa, Senior Researcher at Yano Research Institute Ltd.

"This year's combined shipments of enterprise IP phones and residential terminal adapters in Japan far exceeds the rest of the world, making it the largest market for applications incorporating VoIP technology to date," said Paul Shore, Director of Marketing for Broadcom's VoIP Client Products. "Enterprise IP telephony has now passed the point of being a trial technology and is moving rapidly toward mass acceptance in Japan, which is due largely to the investments and vision of leading suppliers such as NEC, Hitachi, and Iwatsu."

Broadcom IP Phone Design Wins with Leading Japanese IP Phone Manufacturers

The BCM1100 and BCM1101 are shipping in volume and have been incorporated into NEC-i's IPterm30, IPterm85, and IPterm100 IP phones; Iwatsu's IX-12IPKTD IP phone; and Hitachi's 'IP Multi Function Telephone Series' IP phones. All of these manufacturers' phones are shipping in full production to enterprise customers.

"We appreciated the opportunity to share our insight into our customers' IP phone requirements during the BCM1100 design phase," said Takashi Tokura, General Manager, i-Terminal Division of NEC Infrontia Corporation. "The close cooperation we have had with Broadcom's IP phone team over the past three years, has enabled us to successfully bring a family of IP phones to market."

"Broadcom's experience in the Ethernet networking market, its leadership in complex SoC (System-on-a-Chip) integration, and its strong IP phone silicon roadmap convinced Iwatsu that the BCM1101 was the right device for our second generation IP phones," said K. Koyama, Supervisor -- Telecom Engineering Department, Iwatsu. "The high level of silicon integration and the completeness of Broadcom's VoIP firmware package that runs on the chip significantly reduced the development complexity and risk of our IX-12IPKTD phone."

"Broadcom's outstanding technical support and feature-rich phone chip have enabled us to bring a new cost-effective IP phone to market quickly and efficiently," said Yoshio Sumitani, Manager International Business Development, Network Platform Business Development Operation, Hitachi Communication Technologies, Ltd. "The Broadcom team has been very easy to work with and was extremely responsive to our needs during all stages of our development process."

Complete IP Phone Engines

The BCM1100 and BCM1101 are two-port IP phone chips that include an integrated 10/100 Ethernet switch, enabling an office PC and IP phone to share a single LAN connection. The devices contain a 150 MHz MIPS32(TM) RISC processor to enable advanced computer telephony integration (CTI) applications and a powerful dual-MAC digital signal processor (DSP). Also integrated are three analog CODECs capable of supporting both narrowband (8 kHz) and wideband (16 kHz) sampling, which in conjunction with wideband vocoders, such as the Broadcom BroadVoice32(TM), will enable IP Phone networks to deliver high fidelity voice transmission.

Broadcom's IP Telephony Products

Broadcom's enterprise IP phone chips are some of the most advanced solutions in the industry, offering a range of both high-end and basic voice and data capabilities. These chips coupled with Broadcom's proven Ethernet networking and VoIP gateway technologies are enabling manufacturers to deliver economical solutions for migrating businesses to complete IP telephony systems.
