AT&T's Big Spend

4:05 PM -- AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) will make a $1.3 billion down payment on the large slice of B-block 700 MHz spectrum it won in the 700 MHz auction.

The carrier revealed in a filing today that it "must provide to the FCC an initial down payment of $1.327 billion by ten business days from March 20, 2008."

The operator paid $500 million before the start of the auction and will need to stump up "the remaining balance of $5.309 billion on or before twenty business days from March 20, 2008."

The $6.636 billion that AT&T will pay for its for all the licenses won at auction mean that AT&T will have paid out nearly $10 billion for 700 MHz spectrum, including the $2.5 billion it laid out for bandwidth from Aloha Partners LP .

4G is going to be a costly business.

re: AT&T's Big Spend Any idea what the price per MHz/pop AT&T paid for this latest spectrum? The Aloha was about $1.06.
