AT&T: Hurry Up & Wait

2:40 PM -- AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) is said to be lining up vendors for its first Long Term Evolution (LTE) trials.

UBS Research reports that Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU), Ericsson AB (Nasdaq: ERIC), and Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. are possible names for the proto-4G tests. AT&T is expected to roll out LTE in 2011.

AT&T has always maintained that it does not need to deploy LTE as quickly as major rival Verizon Wireless since it can still squeeze more megabits per second out of its 3G network. Verizon, meanwhile, is pushing ahead hard for an LTE data network deployment between 2010 and 2012. (See Verizon Wants LTE ASAP.)
