AT&T: Don't Choke Us
AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) isn't happy with Operation Chokehold, the jokey proposition to overload the company's network this Friday from the Fake Steve site that may have taken on a life of its own.
"We understand that fake steve.net is primarily a satirical forum, but there is nothing amusing about advocating that customers attempt to deliberately degrade service on a network that provides critical communications services for more than 80 million customers," spokeswoman Sarah Andreani told The Dallas Morning News in an email.
"The Secret Diary of Steve Jobs" is a blog where Newsweek writer Dan Lyons impersonates a ranting, satirical version of the Apple CEO. Lyons has reportedly now tried to downplay the stunt, writing: "Also for the record, from our point of view, this is all just a joke that has spun out of control and gained a life of its own."
But as Lyons says, the chokehold might have legs anyway. The Operation Chokehold Facebook site now has 3,2700 fans signed up.
The faux Steve, meanwhile, is still poking at AT&T on his site today.
