BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Siemens Communications, Inc., announced that its customer AT&T has certified the Siemens SURPASS® hiT 7500 multi-haul dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) system for use throughout its network. In connection with this certification, AT&T announced last week that it reached another key milestone in its vision of an all-optical network by carrying live customer traffic on a major route between San Francisco and Seattle, using the Siemens SURPASS hiT 7500 DWDM System.

With transmission rates of up to 3.2 terabytes per second over 80 channels, up to 40G per channel and a photonic range of up to 2,000 kilometers, the Siemens platform gives AT&T a high-speed, flexible transport architecture that has the agility and scalability it needs to serve the dynamic requirements of its customers. The SURPASS hiT 7500 system also requires less photonic signal regeneration and optical-electronic-optical (OEO) conversions along the way, to help AT&T achieve its goals of lower costs, less cycle time and improved reliability. And because AT&T can remotely configure network paths and more quickly provision photonic wavelengths through tunable transponders, ROADMs (remotely configurable optical add-drop multiplexers), and photonic crossconnects, lower costs can be achieved while continuing to improve responsiveness to customer needs.

"We are getting ever-closer to realizing our vision of one photonic network with zero defects and cycle times in our provisioning," said Hossein Eslambolchi, president of AT&T Global Networking Technology Services, chief technology officer and chief information officer. "Even as our network achieves more efficiency, our enterprise customers will reap the benefits of better reliability and more functionality."

"AT&T's commercial deployment of our SURPASS hiT optical platform in its West Coast transport route is a major validation of years of Siemens engineering and its enormous investment in DWDM technology," said Harald Braun, president of the Carrier Networks division of Siemens Communications. "That's because AT&T's architectural, engineering, operational and reliability standards are among the most demanding in the industry. We are proud to help AT&T deliver the finest service to its customers at a competitive cost."
