Android 3G

3:20 PM -- Well, come on, what exactly did you expect?

I've been wondering 'round with the new G1 Android phone and can definitely find areas where the connection throttles back to EDGE. In fact I can walk from one end of our office in the AT&T Building to the other and move between an HSDPA 3G connection to the slower EDGE wireless.

This doesn't surprise me hugely; it is, in fact, the nature of wireless, particularly when T-Mobile US Inc. is still switching on its 3G network. I suspect the situation will get worse when I return to Brooklyn for a well-earned nap this evening, particularly as my apartment has nice thick walls.

Nonetheless, I'm not overly concerned; I expected that this would be the situation before I bought the device, in fact. Wireless is never ever 100 percent in my experience.(See Hot or Not?, 3G iPhone Connection Complaints Arise and Man Bites Phone.)

re: Android 3G This is a novel idea – a gadget review written by a tech journalist who paid with his own cash.

If it’s your main phone, the review will be better because you use it more (than you would a review unit).

But using your own money is unorthodox for a gadget review. Will you be less likely to review it poorly because you paid for it and can’t get out of the two year deal?

re: Android 3G Well, it was more necessity than anything, my other phone was dying :-) I intend to merely offer whatever observations come up as I use it.

re: Android 3G Android

did you get 3G signal at your home? Better than I expected still not great, more of a network issue than the phone's problem.

how's the battery?

smartphone-ish, GPS really sucks down battery life, I rarely use it

how's the browser?

excellent, all the software integration is nicely done

re: Android 3G

Yeah - maybe a 1/week post and if someone has an iPhone comparison it might be nice.

Have you used the music player?
How about the apps store?
