The Hellenic Telecommunications Organization selects Alcatel's 10-Gbit/s DWDM system for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens

PARIS -- Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA), the world leader in optical networking, today announced that the Hellenic Telecommunications Organization S.A. (OTE), the largest Greek telecommunications operator, has selected Alcatel's solution to provide a wet & dry transmission network based on dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) technology. The new integrated infrastructure will significantly expand OTE's current network capacity and coverage, as well as support the multimedia traffic driven by the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year and will include the supply of network engineering services for the terrestrial network and future upgrades. The turnkey project calls for Alcatel to design and install a submarine cable ring and expand OTE's domestic and international terrestrial backbone network. Composed of two cables spanning more than 350 km each, the submarine system will leverage Alcatel's leading 10Gbit/s 1640 WM unrepeatered systems for long-haul and ultra-long-haul applications to connect Corfu, Greece, to Bari in Southern Italy. The domestic network will also deploy Alcatel's 1686 WM in the terrestrial portion linking Corfu to Greece mainland's cities, including Athens, Kozani, Ioannina, Larissa, Patras and Thessaloniki.
