AlcaLu's Giere Gone From CMO Post

John Giere is out as Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU)'s chief marketing officer, Light Reading has learned.

"Tim Krause will become Alcatel-Lucent Chief Marketing Officer as of Monday June 16, replacing John Giere, whose new position will be announced shortly," writes an Alcatel-Lucent spokesman in an email to Light Reading. "Tim will report to Etienne Fouques. This change is part of an ongoing effort in Alcatel-Lucent to simplify and streamline work."

Krause, who currently leads a simplified, streamlined life in Plano, Texas, will assume of all Giere's direct reports.

In one of his final public appearances as CMO, Giere was featured in this LRTV custom video earlier this year. He's the one who's not squinting a lot:

But the marketing shakeup at AlcaLu doesn't stop there, from what we can tell. John Marinho, who held the title of VP of Corporate Strategic Marketing and Global Government & Public Affairs, now seems to have been nipped of his strategic marketing-ness.

"John Marinho will be head of the Americas Global Government and Public Affairs team," the AlcaLu spokesman writes. "He'll report to Cindy Christy, President of the Americas."

The Americas, by the way, consists of North America and the Caribbean and South America, as defined by AlcaLu. If it were up to us here at Light Reading, we'd leave out Oklahoma, but that's not terribly relevant for this story.

"The whole former Lucent marketing organization is kaput," says a former AlcaLu employee, who wishes to remain outside of New Jersey.

The company is set to announce more on Giere's fate in the next few days. But, in the meantime, if you're finding all these staff changes hard to track, keep in mind you can find our complete list of Alcatel-Lucent stories, newswires, and reports, anytime, by clicking here.

re: AlcaLu's Giere Gone From CMO Post Is having a HUGSE EGO the same as being a BASD SPELLSER? Or maybe it's just FATS FINGSERS.

In any regard, people at that position within companies the size of ALU got there by virtue of having outsized egos. Not as a result (in this case) of marketing prowess.

In related news, Avaya just named Giancarlo CEO for the time being.

Now we finally get to see what happens when you mix csco and att DNA. I predict an exothermic reaction.

re: AlcaLu's Giere Gone From CMO Post Mr. Giere was completely incompetent - he was worthless and should have been gone a long time ago. It just goes to show you how incompetent the top layers of management really are... In reality, he [and as a result, his organization] were focused on anything but marketing. He was less than an empty suit that brought NO Value, NO Vision, NO leadership, NO Impact and certainly NO Relevance to the organization. But then again, most of the organization's Sr. management is irrelevant. The "CMO" organization at Alcalu does anything but marketing. And you thought CMO stood for what? It actually stands for "Content Management Organization" as all they do is drive layers and layers of process and act as an interim step to getting a document published on a completely useless website.

The reality is that Alcalu needs more than a change of CMO. If a NEW CMO were to have any impact - a whole lot of other things need to change too. Wanna hold your breath? I say - start with the top and "wack" about 3-4 layers and you might begin to make some progress. Aside from having a reasonably strong technical/technology foundation, dysfunction, incompetence and generally "not having a clue" reins at most layers.

re: AlcaLu's Giere Gone From CMO Post Krause is currently based on Plano, Texas, which although nice, is not as streamlined or sweet as Austin.

re: AlcaLu's Giere Gone From CMO Post Sorry for using this post as reply, but actually it goes in the same direction.

Has anyone of you seen the Alcatelucent booth at the CeBit in Hanover in April 2008 ? And if so, what was your impression besides a big nothingness ? From what I have seen: There was absolutely nothing. Two infomachines that looked like taken from the local trainstation. Nothing more. Absolutely crazy. Were the people deciding on that paid ones or trainees ?? Who from the company agreed on this ? Was this just for meet-and-greet and absolutely nothing else ? Money out of the window for good.

When I wanted to enter the booth, I got asked by the nice lady if I have a planned meeting with someone. So I answered "no" and was literally "kicked out" as only people with a meeting are allowed to enter. Absolutely crazy on a fair like the CeBit. And oh, the brown-haired gal that lounged on a chair with her laptop the whole day like there is no backache at all. Don't know what she actually did there to be honest.

10 meters away was the Huawei booth, and the difference was like night and day. You saw their machines (wireless, optical, even access things if my memory serves me right), you could ask them some un-specific questions that got even answered - ok, in-depths questions were not answered haha, or the counterquestion-method "in which company you are working" was utilized. However, the impression was a real company. Not a pure nothingness like the Acalaluca booth. Again, I have no clue who actually agreed and paid for this mess.
