Wireless-LAN sniffer startup
AirMagnet Inc. is plugging into the world of wired security and performance testing through a deal with
Finisar Corp. (Nasdaq: FNSR).
AirMagnet is working to link its system of distributed 802.11 sensors with the Finisar LAN Surveyor, so that SNMP data and other information from the wireless network can be passed to the user. The firms plan to make the AirMagnet system available via the Finisar user console.
"The idea would be that a Finisar customer who's already getting information from [LAN Surveyor] can plug our system right in," says Rich Mironov, AirMagnet's VP of marketing.
AirMagnet already has a similar deal in place with Finisar's rival,
Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A).
Some startups that started off with purely WiFi concerns have recently massaged their message to bring wired networks into the fold. In hopes, no doubt, of appealing to a wider swathe of the networking market.
Notably,
Vernier Networks Inc. is now selling itself as a wired
and wireless security firm, after spending a couple of years in the trenches as a wireless LAN enterprise gateway vendor (see

But Mironov claims that AirMagnet will not be treading that particular path, and is instead looking to find more
wired networking partners that it can take wireless.
