PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) today introduced three ergonomic and rugged handheld devices for the installation, commissioning and maintenance of optical fiber and transmission systems: an optical power meter, a dual laser source and an automated optical attenuator.

The Agilent N3970A Handheld Optical Power Meter is a high-end, user-friendly, wide-dynamic-range device featuring three percent overall accuracy, quick response time and no need for a warm-up period. Delivered with three interchangeable push-pull adapters for the connectors, the N3970A has a battery life of up to 240 hours and can be used with autotest-compatible light sources to automate loss-testing functions and provide automatic wavelength identification. This set-up allows users to easily measure 1310 nm and 1550 nm and store the results in one of the 845 flexible memory positions.

The Agilent N3974A Handheld Dual Laser Source is a high-end instrument for painless field test of fiber-optic systems and features ultra-high stability and no need for a warm-up period. The device has a battery life of up to 140 hours and a typical output power of -5 dBm at 1310 and 1550 nm adjustable over 6 dB in 0.01 dB steps. A single connector can be used for both wavelength sources. The N3974A is also delivered with three dust-and-drop protected interchangeable push-pull connector adapters and can be used with autotest-compatible power meters to automate loss-testing functions and provide automatic wavelength identification.

The Agilent N3977A Handheld Automated Optical Attenuator is a high-end, user-friendly precision instrument for field-testing of fiber-optic systems, featuring very high productivity, power handling of up to +23 dBm, return loss of less than -40 dBm and low wavelength dependence. Calibration is performed at every attenuation position in 0.05 dB increments, ensuring ultimate linearity and accuracy over the full dynamic range. Similar to the N3970A and the N3974A, this instrument incorporates dust-and-drop protected interchangeable connectors, simple menu-driven five-button automated operation and a battery lifetime of 200 to 600 hours. The N3977A can be used in manual, relative, step and program mode and can be pre-programmed with 15 different user programs for use by unskilled personnel.
