Data Centers Go Power Crazy

One of the more interesting areas of development around data center technology is the innovation underway in the way power is sourced, used and even re-used to help reduce carbon emissions.

Data centre proliferation Another reason for data centre proliferation is that many countries have data laws requiring citizen data to remain within the country. The days when one data centre in Dublin was enough to serve the rest of Europe are over; which is why Amazon is opening a new data centre in Sweden next year to power its cloud computing operations.

Cooling Water I would like to offer free cooling water to any data center that locates itself next to my swimming pool. However, if the heat output is too powerful for comfortable swimming, then I would instead like to offer free cooling water to any data center that locates itself next to my canned soup factory.

Smart power This is an excellent example of environmentally conscious companies creating value. Environmental regulation often gets bad press for restricting business but this a prime example of how a data center can impact its residents with the provision of power. Is the power cheaper than traditional power from a utility provider or is it the same cost? Also, does it provide a secondary revenue stream to the data center to offset its costs?
