NEW YORK -- EDO Corporation (NYSE:EDO) announced today that it has entered the fiber optic communications market with a $3.5 million contract award from a leading global fiber optic network operator for electronic modules for use in broadband fiber optic network systems. The units, the first devices in a series of OC-192-compatible modules under development by EDO, are scheduled for delivery over the next 18 months. These modules, which have broad applicability in the fiber optic industry, interface with the optical portions of the fiber systems and are capable of transmitting and receiving data at rates in excess of 10 Gigabits per second. When used in Dense Wave Division Multiplexed (DWDM) systems, data rates in excess of 1 Terabit per second over several thousand kilometers of fiber optic cable can be achieved. The initial $3.5 million contract is for modules used in conjunction with the transmitter Lithium Niobate modulator, enabling superior BER performance. The modules were designed and will be manufactured by EDO's Space and Communications Products Division at its facility in Deer Park, N.Y.

Chief Executive Officer James M. Smith said, "This significant award represents the initial success of EDO's effort to apply the Company's expertise in advanced microelectronic design to the multi-billion dollar fiber optic communications market. These modules are based on technology and designs developed by EDO as part of its continuous advanced research and development program for communications and space applications. This new application in fiber optic communications demonstrates the broad applicability of EDO's core technologies in new markets. Today's award opens a large and growing commercial market opportunity for EDO that has the potential to become a significant new business for the Company. These are mission-critical products with long production runs, characteristics that make them a perfect fit with our core business strategy. This initial award represents a major step forward in our planned expansion into the commercial communications industry."
