E-MTA Shipments Top 1 Million Units in Q1

Fueled by accelerating MSO IP telephone service rollouts, quarterly PacketCable embedded multimedia terminal adapter (E-MTA) unit shipments topped the 1 million mark for the first time in Q1 2005. According to Cable Digital News publisher Kinetic Strategies, E-MTA unit volume increased 61% over Q4 propelling sales of integrated DOCSIS modem and IP phone to 1.06 million units in Q1.
ARRIS Inc. leapfrogged Motorola in the first quarter to become top dog in E-MTAs, shipping 334,280 units for a 31.5% share of the market. Motorola's E-MTA shipments totaled 300,000 units in Q1, up 36 % from Q4, yielding a 23.6% market share. Scientific-Atlanta captured the number-three position as its E-MTA shipments doubled in Q1 to 251,000 units.
However, the rise of E-MTAs marks the demise of data-only DOCSIS cable modem sales. Shipments of data-only modems failed to clear the 4 million-unit mark in Q1 2005 for the first time since Q2 2004. However, the combined 5.01 million total DOCSIS data/voice modems shipped in Q1 is a new record for the industry.
