E-MTA Shipments Climb in the Fourth Quarter

Worldwide DOCSIS data-only cable modem shipments declined 1.8% in the fourth quarter of 2004, while E-MTAs -- DOCSIS modems with integrated PacketCable voice support -- climbed 6.4%. That said, E-MTAs only accounted for 13.7% of total DOCSIS shipments in Q4, up from 12.7% in Q3. According to Cable Digital News publisher Kinetic Strategies, data-only DOCSIS shipments totaled 4.1 million units in Q4, while E-MTA shipments topped 655,000. Motorola held its position as the top supplier of both data-only DOCSIS modems and E-MTAs, shipping 2.2 million total. Thomson held the number-two spot in the data-only category, shipping 550,000 units. S-A claimed the number-three position for both DOCSIS data modems and E-MTAs in Q4 shipping 460,000 total devices. For full-year 2004, worldwide E-MTA shipments topped 1.6 million compared to 16.1 million DOCSIS cable modem units.
