ROTTERDAM, The Netherlands -- Redback Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: RBAK) has today announced that Dutch CLEC (Competitive Local Exchange Carrier), Cistron Telecom has selected the Redback(R) SmartEdge(TM), its new multi-service optical transport platform, following a competitive bid. Cistron is building its own fibre transport network throughout the Netherlands as it captures customers with high volumes of subscribers and traffic, seeking a diverse range of fast data and voice services in their offices and homes. The Redback SmartEdge is being deployed to optimise the economic and resource performance of Cistron's SONET/SDH optical ring architecture, and to provide an in-built migration path to lucrative IP (Internet Protocol) services within this existing infrastructure.

"As with Cistron, we are seeing more and more service providers wanting an easy, flexible route towards packet-based IP services," said Joop van Aard, vice president of operations for Europe, Middle East and Africa at Redback. "Our SmartEdge solution is built around highly-programmable ASICs (Application Specific Integrated Circuit), giving Cistron a straightforward means to provide its customers with the rich IP services they are increasingly demanding but without risking its investment in the existing infrastructure. SmartEdge can solve the complete optical network conundrum for service providers and carriers, giving them flexibility, bandwidth management, rapid return on investment and space."
