Voice-over-IP has been a thorn in operators' side for the past 20 years, but now that it is expected to crack the 1 billion subscribers mark by the end of this year, is it a threat they need to be paying more attention to?

Irish Telecom suggests they should, in a new infographic it produced on the subject. The ISP says that the VoIP market is growing at a compound annual growth rate of 6.46%, expected to reach $82.7 billion by 2017. It's being adopted across the globe by businesses and consumers alike. It's certainly not a new threat to operators, but it could be a growing one, as the statistics below suggest.
