Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC)

A semiconductor that's custom-built for a specific use.

Often, an ASIC is built for only one customer. For example, Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CSCO) and Juniper Networks Inc. (NYSE: JNPR) design their own ASICs for use in their own systems.
