FRANKFURT -- Although there are still several addresses available on the nearly twenty-year- old IPv4 (Internet Protocol Version 4), they won't last forever. For this reason, IPv6 (Internet Protocol Version 6) is being tested as the replacement for IPv4. Berkom, the innovations house of Deutsche Telekom's systems division T-Systems, has launched a six-month pilot project to evaluate the efficiency of the new protocol before it becomes the new Internet standard. IPv6 also offers improvements in areas like routing and network auto-configuration. Both protocols will run simultaneously for several years before the final exchange is completed.
