TM Global, the wholesale business arm of Telekom Malaysia, announced on Monday that it will expand two data centers located in Cyberjaya and Johor respectively to meet the growing demand for domestic and international data hosting services.

The second phase of the Klang Valley Data Centre (KVDC) in Cyberjaya and the Iskandar Puteri Data Centre (IPDC) in Johor will be up and running in 2025. Together, they will deliver a combined IT load of about 20MW.

TM Global added that the expansion will meet the Uptime Institute's Tier 3 standards and the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver rating for long-term sustainability, a globally recognized green building certification.

"KVDC and IPDC are integral infrastructures in Malaysia's digital ecosystem, serving as international gateways and interconnected points to support 5G networks. This second phase of our data center expansion will feature sustainable designs, boosting our capacity to support hyperscalers, OTT players, cloud and next generation AI providers, as well as enterprises," TM Global's executive vice president, Khairul Liza Ibrahim, said in a statement.

Meeting Southeast Asia's growing demand for connectivity

According to TM Global, the expansion of the two data centers is part of Telekom Malaysia's strategic roadmap to grow its infrastructure ecosystem in a bid to position Malaysia as the "preferred digital hub" in Southeast Asia.

This roadmap includes the telco's partnership with Singtel's data center arm Nxera, announced in July, to build a 64MW hyper-connected, AI-enabled data center campus in Iskandar Puteri, Johor. Scheduled to begin commercial operations in 2026, the Tier 3 data center campus – along with the two expanded KVDC and IPDC facilities – will be the foundation for digital services such as cloud, advanced analytics, AI and the Internet of Things.

In addition, Khairul Liza said that TM Global's newly acquired facilities-based operator license in Singapore enhances the company's data hosting services by providing seamless and secure data center-to-data center connectivity through an extensive domestic fiber optic network and international submarine cable systems.

"This enables us to meet the growing connectivity demands across the region, linking data centers from Thailand to Malaysia, Singapore, and Batam in Indonesia," she added.

TM Global currently operates six data centers in Malaysia and one regional data center in Hong Kong. The company also owns and leases 35 submarine cable systems, including the Asia Link Cable (ALC) system, which connects Hong Kong and Singapore with branches in the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Brunei Darussalam and Hainan, China. The ALC system, expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2025, will provide an additional 24 Tbit/s of international capacity to TM Global's data centers in Johor.
